Is Toluna Surveys a Scam?

First of all, let’s answer the first question you’re probably wondering: Is Toluna a scam or a legitimate way to earn money online?

The simple answer is that Toluna Surveys is not a scam.

Toluna Surveys will pay you money in exchange for taking their surveys.

Is Toluna Survey a Scam

The company has been around for years, and numerous testimonials exist stating that they allow members to cash out.

If you’re looking to make money taking surveys, Toluna, in my opinion, is a genuine way to earn some extra cash.

But with that being said, all isn’t rosy when it comes to the outlook for Toluna.

While you can earn some money doing surveys, it is not possible to make a living with it. I’ll explain more in a while.

In case, you are looking for a way to earn money that could potentially replace your current income, then this program may be something you are looking for.

How Does Toluna Work?

Toluna Survey is an easy site to sign up and operate.

To sign up, you’ll need to give a range of personal and demographic details about yourself.

These details will then be used to send you surveys that you qualify for.

It’s important that you provide accurate info when signing up, otherwise you’ll be receiving surveys you can’t complete.

Once you’ve signed up, Toluna lets you choose surveys from a number of categories, like fashion or electronics.

They also send you survey opportunities tailored to your demographics and personal info.

When you complete surveys, you receive points.

Earn enough points, and you can redeem them for gift cards, Paypal cash deposits or other rewards.

The Toluna Surveys…

Surveys tend to be around 15 to 20 minutes in length, though there are exceptions.

For the most part, the point payout corresponds to length of survey. Longer surveys mean more points. Shorter surveys earn fewer points.

However, you should know that this isn’t a perfect system. Sometimes, a shorter survey will pay out more points, or a longer one fewer points. There’s usually no way of knowing in advance if this is going to happen.

Qualification of Surveys…

In addition to surveys for which you get paid, Toluna also offers Profile Surveys. These surveys don’t directly earn you points. Instead, they let Toluna know your information so they can match you with surveys you qualify for.

While you don’t earn points by taking Profile Surveys, they will increase your qualification rate in the long run. This is an important idea when it comes to online surveys.

One thing to understand if you’ve never completed surveys online before: You won’t always qualify for a survey. And if you don’t qualify, you don’t get any points.

What this means is that you may start a survey and after a few minutes you’ll be terminated. And the time you spent on it is wasted.

Toluna is sometimes able to immediately let you know when you’re not qualified. But sometimes you’ll fill out questions before learning you don’t qualify.

This can be a frustrating experience, especially if your luck is poor on a given day. I’ve experienced disqualification rates over 50% at times. And when this is happening, you’re not making any money.

On that subject, let’s go over the specifics of making money with Toluna.

How Much Can You Make with Toluna?

The short answer is ‘not much’.

If you’ve ever used online survey websites before, the point totals on Toluna might make you excited at first.

On many sites, you earn 50 to 100 points per survey. On Toluna, you can earn as much as 10,000.

But of course, there’s a catch: Toluna requires more points to cash out for the same value. On Toluna, 3,000 points is the equivalent of $1.

When you adjust the Toluna points to real money, you’re not making much – In fact, less than some other survey sites. You can see GrabPoints, Opinion Outpost, Global Test Market.

On top of that, Toluna has very restrictive thresholds for cashing out via Paypal. You need 60,000 points ($20) to receive a Paypal deposit. On many survey sites, it’s $5.

So, that’s a negative for Toluna.

I don’t know about you, but bottom line, I feel that the amount paid by these survey sites do not justify the amount of time spent.

My Experience with Toluna

In my experience, doing surveys with Toluna averages out to around $0.75 per hour.

The actual value will vary from session to session, but overall it’s less than $1 per hour.

The two biggest determinants for how much you can make are qualification rate and the luck of the draw with surveys.

To Qualify and Earn Money Requires Luck

Sometimes, you will end up on a hot streak and qualify for most surveys you pick.

Other times you’ll be cold and run into termination after termination.

The other factor is that some surveys simply pay better for your time than others. There’s no real way to know this ahead of time.

You sign up, and sometimes Toluna will tell you how long the survey is supposed to take. But the value of the survey and how long it takes isn’t possible to perfectly estimate.

During the best of times, you’re still probably not going to make much more than a couple dollars an hour.

And during the worst times, you’ll make considerably less.

Have Realistic Expectations

What this means is that you need to be realistic about your expectations if you sign up for Toluna.

Toluna will never be a steady source of primary income.

If you’re looking to make a few dollars on the side for an impulse purchase or two, Toluna might be able to help.

But if you are looking for something that could supplement your household income or potentially get you out the rat race, there are other opportunities that could help you achieve that.

Pros and Cons of Toluna

Pros

  • You get paid for your efforts – If you have a different opinion, leave a comment below.
  • Completing Surveys can be done from home.
  • It offers a nice interface, and it is easy to navigate their website.
  • The surveys are neatly categorised.

Cons

  • The amount of money earned doesn’t justify the amount of time spent (my opinion).
  • The payout threshold is high as compared to other Get Paid To (GPT) sites.
  • Toluna only offers Surveys for cash, while other GPT sites offer more than that.

Is Toluna Worth it?

It really depends on what your goal is.

If you intend to earn some extra cash to help a little with your cash-flow, then it could be worth your time.

Spend enough time on Toluna, and you can eventually cash out or get a gift card.

However, the opposite is true if you are looking for an avenue to consistently supplement your household income.

The main factor is that you just can’t make enough money for your efforts.

Does the idea of spending 20 hours or more to get $20 sound all that appealing? You have to be the judge of this. I’m just giving my 2 cents here, being someone who’ve tried Toluna, and as someone who makes a living online.

In case you are someone who is looking for a way to earn enough money to supplement your living expenses and more, then I would highly recommend that you check this out.
